The standard for Johnston girls basketball is extremely high. After winning the state title in the 2020 season, the Dragons would return to the championship game every year after that, winning in 2022 and finishing runner up in 2021 and 2023. This 2024 team has the exact same goals as years past, and coming into the season, the Dragons felt good about their chances.

Johnston's season began on the Monday after thanksgiving in Cedar Rapids. Having a long road trip, right after thanksgiving break is not an easy way to start a season, but the Dragons showed no signs of rust. Johnston dominated CR Prairie 83-42, led by Iowa State commit Aili Tanke to get the season off to a 1-0 start.

After a late night drive home on Monday, the Dragons would be right back on the road the next day to take on Waukee Northwest. Northwest is a team that a lot of people were talking about going into the season. With new head coach Sam Powell in charge, the Wolves were ranked inside the top ten. But the Wolves proved to be no match for the Dragons, with Johnston cruising to a 72-56 win. Johnston was once again led by senior Aili Tanke with her tying a school record in three point field goals in a single game (7).

The home opener was against Ankeny in another top ten matchup. From start to finish, the Dragons dominated the Hawks and eased their way to a 70-49 win. Tanke once again led the team in scoring with 16.

Johnston had their toughest test of the season so far when sixth ranked Dowling Catholic came to Johnston High School, led by junior Creighton commit Ava Zediker. During this game, Johnston showed just how good this team could be. The Dragons dominated the Maroons and held a double-digit lead for the majority for the game. Johnston had four starters finish in double-digits scoring and scored in every way possible, leading to a 65-53 win.

Tonight, the Dragons take on crosstown rival Urbandale for the first time this season. Johnston looks to continue their excellence and win their 24th straight game over the Jayhawks.
